Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:
In 1798 the political economist Malthus announced that in time mankind would
face starvation, having outgrown the available food supplies. Today, a century
and a half later, there are still experts who forecast the same global disaster---
unless urgent measures are taken to prevent it. By the end of the present century
there may well be over six thousand million people living on this globe. In order
to keep pace with this increase in mankind the farmers of the world will have to
step up their production of food by at least two percent every year. But in our
world, there are no large worthwhile reserves for farmland remaining, and good
fertile land is continually being changed into industrial use. Moreover, erosion
of the soil makes a constant loss. Careful research, carried out over many years
in all manners of climatic conditions, has produced a revolutionary method of
growing crops without using any soil at all. Hydroponics(姘存牻娉), as this
technique is called, may well be the answer to all our food worries; already it
has accomplished wonders in producing huge crops. Hydroponics was once a
complicated and expensive business, now it is well out of the experimental stage.
Labor costs are far lower than when normal methods of agriculture are employed.
In fact, it is a completely automatic system. There is no hard work, no digging
or ploughing, and no weeding to speak of. Yields can be far higher than they are
in soil.

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:
During the nineteenth century, women in the United States organized and took
part in a large number of reform movements, including movements to reorganize
the prison system, improve education, and, most importantly, to free the slaves.
Many young women fought hard to get the right to enter university as men did,
and the right to work side by side with male workers in a factory. Some women
saw similarities in the social position of women and slaves. Women like Elizabeth
Stanton and Lucy Stone were feminists锛堝コ鏉冧富涔夎咃級 who supported the
rights of women to speak and join equally with men in opposing slavery. Women
became involved primarily in order to better their living conditions and the
conditions of others. When the Civil War ended in 1865, the Fourteenth and
Fifteenth Amendments锛堜慨姝o級 to the Constitution passed in 1868 and 1870
gave citizenship and right to vote to blacks but not to women. Discouraged but
resolved, feminists influenced more and more women to demand this right. In 1869
the state of Wyoming had gave way to demands by feminists, but eastern states
resisted more stubbornly than before. A women's voting law had been presented to
every Congress since 1878 but it continually failed to pass until 1920, when the
Nineteenth Amendment gave women the right to vote.

D. To amend the Declaration of Independence
38. What had occurred shortly after the Civil War?
A. Wyoming was admitted to the Union.
B. A women's voting law was introduced in Congress.
